Nintendo 3DS Ambassador Program: now you can find out if you made the cut

Remember the Nintendo “Ambassador Program” for 3DS owners with the price drop blues?
Early adopters were offered 20 free games if they signed in to the Nintendo eShop before August 11th, but the software didn’t confirm if they’d successfully joined or not. Now they can check for themselves by heading to Nintendo’s support page via our easy-to-click source link, enter their 11 digit serial number and see if they’re due some freebies courtesy of delicious corporate guilt.

Nintendo Video app for the American 3DS appears with four videos in tow

After some will they / won’t they drama, Nintendo snuck out its new Video app for the 3DS, giving owners of the handheld a little something to enjoy in 3D between gaming sessions. That said, we hope your Netflix queue is full because there are apparently only four selections available at any given time. At launch, those slots are filled with an intro video, two short films (Sunday Jog and Dinosaur Office) and a Captain America movie trailer. Users should expect a continuously updated carousel of content going forward, but for now if you’re not near your glasses-free 3D machine (or don’t own one at all) check out these shots provided by one of our tipsters. Otherwise check for the app in the eShop; though with only a four-pack to start, we’d suggest pacing yourself instead of diving in all at once.

[Thanks, Xavier]

Triforce Johnson gets his Nintendo 3DS first, the legend continues

There are fans, and then there are fans, if you know what we mean, and Isaiah Triforce Johnson has secured his spot in column number two with a Power Gloved fist — here he is accepting the very first Nintendo 3DS on the east coast from Reggie Fils-Aime, president of Nintendo of America. Johnson camped out all week in front of Best Buy’s Union Square location to be first in line at the launch event, replicating his feat of five years prior when he was first to purchase the Wii. Of course, Japanese gamers have had the autostereocopic handheld for over a month now, but we have to give credit where it’s due — we’re already imagining Greg Packer and Triforce Johnson duking it out in a little Street Fighter IV 3D Edition duel. By the way, we snapped a few shots of the 3DS launch event this morning — check them out below.

Nintendo 3DS gets new friend code system, finds beauty in unification

Ever try to do multiplayer on a DS game? We’re really sorry to hear that. It’s a mess of lengthy friend codes that does more to discourage online play than enable it. That’s going away with the 3DS. At Nintendo’s 3DS press event in New York they announced a new system where there’s only a single code, assigned per-console and registered only once. You’ll have a single group of friends and, when they pop online in a new game, you’ll see them there. No need for multiple multiple lists and less of a need for Tylenol, too.

Nintendo 3DS ships February 26 in Japan, US and Europe in March, auto-generates Mii with front-facing camera

Enough with the rumored prices and launch dates already, let’s get official. Nintendo just announced a February 26 ship date in Japan for ¥25,000 (about 8). It’ll then land in the US and Europe in March for an undisclosed amount. Launch colors are aqua blue or cosmo black.

Nintendo demonstrated the ability to take your picture using the 3DS’ front-facing camera and then automatically convert the image into a Mii — you can edit it too. You can even merge two photos into a single image if you choose. You can export images as QR code or as a file to a bundled 2GB SD card. Ninty also announced a special edition Super Mario DSi LL (no hardware changes) set to launch for ¥18,000 in Japan on October 28th. Nintendo again confirmed that a Wii Remote Plus is in development and will be announced at a date some time in the future.
