Apple files (again) for a preliminary ban against the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1
If you found yourself longing for the minor tweaks Samsung made to the Galaxy Tab 10.1 in Germany earlier this year, you may be in luck: Apple’s filed for a preliminary injunction against the slate stateside. It isn’t the first one, either, Cupertino filed something similar back in February, though it didn’t quite pass legal muster. After gaining some headway earlier this week, Cook’s crew is in for round two, according to FOSS Patents, asking for Judge Koh to rule in their favor without a new hearing. Concerned consumers, however, can sidestep the whole mess by simply opting for an injunction-exempt Galaxy Tab 2. Details and speculation can be found at the source link below, just in case you aren’t already sick to death of the whole Samsung / Apple spat.

Apple v. Samsung judge yells ‘get to the point, you two’
Judge Lucy Koh, presiding over the courtroom battle ‘twixt Apple and Samsung has ordered that both companies slim down the bundle of litigation so its easy for juries to understand. The docket currently contains 16 patent violations, six trademark issues, five “trade dress” claims and an antitrust matter — which her Honor Judge Koh described as a “cruel and unusual punishment” for a jury. If both companies can’t get over a table and produce a Cliffs Notes edition of their global patent battle, then she’ll postpone the trial date until 2013.

Did the Samsung Galaxy S III just appear in Vietnam? (video)
Whoa, there. We’re still weeks away from an official big stage unveiling, but it looks like Samsung’s next Galaxy phone is already out there. Vietnamese site Tinhte, who have past form on these kind of things, have got their hands on the GT-I9300 — purportedly the Galaxy S III if Samsung decides to follow its own naming convention. According to the specifications leaked, the phone houses a 4.6-inch display at 720 x 1,184 resolution (320 DPI, depending on whether you include those on-screen Android buttons), while a quad-core 1.4 GHz processor works on keeping the Ice Cream Sandwich OS running smoothly. Other hardware mentions include 1GB of RAM, 8-megapixel camera, 16GB of storage plus microSD capability. According to Tinhte, the 2050 mAh battery will arrive with NFC capabilities baked in, like the Galaxy Nexus before it. While we’ve seem some similar hardware leaks already, this video makes a very strong case for it being the real deal. Take a look for yourself right after the break.

Samsung to offer flexible displays in 2012, challenges Nokia to a twist contest
Flexible displays? Samsung’s got ‘em, too. A few days after Nokia showed off its Kinetic Device prototype under the blue lights of Nokia World, Samsung made mention of its own plans to unleash some bendy mobile devices on the world. A spokesperson for the company was scarce on details, but noted that the flexible displays are targeted for 2012. The technology, which was showcased at this year’s CES, will initially be incorporated into handsets, with tablets following down the road.

Samsung Galaxy S II shows up in Ukraine, gets a loving preview (video)
Where would we be without prototypes, eh? One such pre-production unit, of Samsung’s dual-core Galaxy S II, has escaped into the Russian Ukrainian wilderness, where it’s been thankfully rescued from the cold by the guys over at gagadget. Apart from squaring it up against the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 — which we can only surmise was the nearest available Android handset, it surely can’t have been the best — they also dig pretty deeply into the latest TouchWiz UI and dish up a thoroughgoing gallery of sample images from that 8 megapixel autofocus camera on the back. It’s an enlightening read, once you’ve enrolled Google Translate’s help, though the video after the break will probably be most helpful to people familiar with Vladimir Putin’s mother tongue. For the rest of us, it’s a great visual tour of some yummy hardware.
[Thanks, DarkDvr]

Samsung demos ambient light-powered transparent LCD
Wirelessly-powered TVs are nice, and transparent displays are cool and all, but what about an ambient light-powered transparent LCD? Well, that’s nothing short of awesome. Samsung showed off just such a device at CeBIT 2011 last week — a prototype 46-inch display with 1920 x 1080 resolution and ten-finger touchscreen capability. We aren’t sure what kind of black magic Sammy put in this thing, but it’s an incredible feat of engineering to make such a large display — and its accompanying solar cells — efficient enough to run exclusively off the juice it pulls from surrounding light sources. No word on how the photon-powered LCD compares to existing HD monitors in terms of brightness, refresh rates, or color reproduction, but a muted picture is a small price to pay for cutting the electrical cord permanently.
